In April 1918, 58th Division moved to positions near Villers-Bretonneux which, towards the end of that month, had become the focal point in the struggle for Amiens. 12th London of 175 Brigade were involved in that fight and on 24th April they were relieved from the front line there and while moving back through the Bois d’Abbe a platoon of B Company was practically wiped out by one shell that fell among them. There were about fifty men in a platoon and the carnage must have been exceptional even by the standards of the First World War. Albert Curtis was one of those killed on this day.
